Major Khleber M. Van Zandt

Khleber Miller Van Zandt is known as one of Fort Worth’s founding fathers. In the Civil War, he organized a company in the Seventh Texas Infantry. Van Zandt was a soldier, lawyer, merchant, banker, and civic leader who also helped found Fort Worth’s newspaper. He was described as “one of the quiet men who built homes … engaged in business, promoted towns,… opened schools, and enforced law and order.” He was also a prisoner of war during the Civil War and briefly served in the Texas Legislature.
